Springtime is upon us, and for many homeowners, that means it’s time for a thorough household cleaning. If you’re gearing up for your spring cleaning, it’d be worthwhile to add a few extra tasks to the docket for the benefit of your HVAC system.

Whether you’re aware of it or not, there are several specific parts of your home where the cleanliness can directly impact your heating and cooling appliances. And, with the hot Omaha, Nebraska summer on its way, it’s particularly important that your AC unit is healthy and running efficiently. So, in addition to your normal cleaning chores, consider hitting up the following parts of your home as well.

1. Your Air Vents

Before any of the air that your HVAC system circulates can warm or cool you, it has to pass directly through your air vents. However, the contaminants found in your home will naturally find their way into those vents over time, eventually accumulating enough to form significant obstructions.

When this happens, it causes a couple of different problems. For one, your HVAC unit must increase its air pressure just to push the oxygen through all of the dust, dirt, pollen, and random debris. In addition to using up extra energy, that adds unnecessary wear and tear to the appliance. Beyond that, it’s inevitable for some of those contaminants to get picked up by the circulated air, which leads to worsened indoor air quality in your home.

Fortunately, your household air vents should be easy to clean. All you’ll need is a screwdriver to remove the cover panels and a vacuum cleaner extension hose to clean out the vents.

2. Your Air Ducts

Your home’s air ducts represent another part of your household that you should always keep as clean as possible. These ducts serve as the metaphorical highways for your heating and cooling units to transmit conditioned air to the different sections of your living space. If you neglect your ducts, though, it’s highly likely that pollutants like dust, dander, pollen, and even mold will build up inside of them. When that buildup gets bad enough, it can worsen the performance, efficiency, and overall health of your HVAC system. Plus, if certain ducts are more obstructed than others, that can lead to hot and cold spots around your home.

To ensure that your ducts are thoroughly cleaned, you’ll need to enlist local duct cleaning professionals. In addition to getting rid of the accumulated contaminants, the cleaners will be able to verify that your ducts aren’t harboring any leaks or damage. If any of those problems are present, finding out about them earlier will save you a ton of hassle in the long run.

3. Your Household Surfaces

If you haven’t conducted a thorough cleaning in a while, it’s likely that many of the surfaces around your home contain layers of dust, dirt, and dander. The more of those contaminants that you can successfully remove, the easier things will be for your HVAC system.

An effective method that you can use is to take a damp rag and wipe down all of the solid surfaces in your home. Be sure to hit all of the tables, chairs, countertops, and wood or tile floors. Don’t stop there, though. Your rugs, mats, and pillows could also be storing lots of contaminants, so you’ll want to take them outdoors and thoroughly shake them out. You may even want to bat them together to knock loose any dust or dirt that may be clinging to the fabric. By ridding your household of these pollutants, you’ll be ensuring that they never accumulate within your ducts or vents or cycle into your HVAC system.
